WELCOME TO THE FIRST ISSUE OF MIND POWER NEWS!
Friday, May 16, 2003
First of all, I'd like to thank you all for signing up. The response to my new venture has been amazing, and I'm going to do my best to send you the most fascinating information each issue. Originally I planned to send out monthly mailings, but as I've compiled issue one I realize there's just way too much brain warping information out there. My short-term goal is to put everything up on the website, which will soon be the most thorough collection of mind power related information on the internet. Until then, I'll be dishing out little gems of wisdom via this e-zine, probably every two or three weeks.
I'd like to set the tone for this e-zine with a quote from Arthur C. Clarke, who said "The universe is not only stranger than we know, it is stranger than we CAN know." With that in mind, let's begin...
THE FLASH MIND READER
If you haven't had some well-meaning friend forward this to you yet, allow me the honor of messing with your head. Here's a little computer program that'll melt your brain until you finally figure it out. Click Here
SONY CONCLUDES THAT PSYCHIC POWERS ARE REAL
This is a way old story from 1998, but I'm including it here because it's pretty much the article that planted the seed for Mind Power News, and began my collection of freaky psi stories. This beauty of a tale comes from Sony's Psychic Research Lab, which was closed down after the head honchos at Sony admitted that psychic powers are real but, sadly, not profitable.
"The notion of a trendsetting company like Sony trying to develop psi-based products is rather refreshing - if not a little improbable. Why would one of the world's leading technology companies get involved in the marginal world of telepathy and clairvoyance? Certainly not for the greater good of humankind. No, Sony clearly intended to commercialise psi technology. Never mind that most scientists and engineers don't even believe psi exists; their skepticism would be moot if someone could create something - anything - useful based on psi." Full Story
SCOTTISH ACADEMICS CLAIM SCIENTIFIC PROOF OF "SIXTH SENSE"
Last month researchers from the University of Glasgow came to the same conclusion as the folks at Sony: something which must be called a "sixth sense" does indeed exist.
"There is no doubt from the work we have done that mediums can obtain information using more than the five normal senses. The results so far have been assessed with hard maths and statistics. We believe that we have disproved the idea that all mediums are able to do is make general statements." Full Story
PARALYZED PATIENTS USE THEIR BRAIN WAVES TO CONTROL COMPUTERS
Neuroscientists are discovering ways to help paralyzed patients reconnect with the outside world using the only power they have left: the power of their thoughts.
"Thanks to German neuroscientist Niels Birbaumer, 11 paralyzed patients can now control a computer using their brain waves, which means they can do something unprecedented in human history: communicate by thought alone." Full Story
THE SCIENCE OF MEDITATION
For the first time, brain researchers are beginning to discover just what, exactly, happens to your brain during meditation, and why, exactly, regular meditation seems to affect a wide variety of beneficial changes in the human body.
"The relaxation response has been shown to lower blood pressure, heart rate and respiration; to reduce anxiety, anger, hostility and mild-to-moderate depression; to help alleviate insomnia, premenstrual syndrome, hot flashes and infertility; and to relieve some types of pain, most notably tension headaches. What nobody, until now, has even come close to explaining is how meditation may work. That is, what mechanisms within the brain might explain why changing one's mental focus can have such large effects on mood and metabolism. Nor has there been, until now, much collaboration between neuroscientists and experts in meditation such as Buddhist monks." Full Story
HOW TO BE LUCKY
British psychologist Dr. Richard Wiseman's new book "The Luck Factor," concludes that good luck has as much to do with attitude and expectation as it does with random good fortune.
"Two years ago, he invited people who considered themselves unlucky or luckless to "Luck School." They were asked to spend a month carrying out exercises designed to break routines and open them to opportunities. Four out of five subsequently reported they were happier, more satisfied and, in their own estimation, luckier, he said." Full Story
MIND AS MEDICINE: HOW THOUGHTS CAN CONTROL PAIN
Are you in pain? Yeah, who isn't. Studies from John Hopkins Hospital conclude that if you're in pain, "you can immediately decrease your agony, reduce your need for medication, heal more quickly and possibly even live longer" by changing your emotional state.
"Doctors see this in practice quite often. A patient might come in with tremendous pain, thinking she has cancer. Once she discovers the pain is only due to a pulled muscle, the pain decreases almost immediately. Being anxious or worried about the pain contributes to that sum of emotions, making pain worse. Likewise, saying things that bring about a positive mental state, such as, "This is a good kind of pain because it means I'm healing," decreases pain." Full Story
SCIENTISTS BELIEVE IN GHOSTS AND ALIENS
And you thought scientists didn't have a sense of humour...
"The survey of 18 scientists at Waikato University and Britain's Leicester University found that most were not willing to rule out the possibility that "some houses are haunted by ghosts". Many also believed it was possible that "wearing jewellery made out of certain crystals can help to keep you healthy", and that "in the past aliens from some other planet have landed on Earth". HOW TO USE MIND POWER TO ACHIEVE ANY GOAL
Stuart Lichtman is the M.I.T. engineer who created "Cybernetic Transposition." It sounds complex, but it's actually a simple method to focus your mind and achieve your goals. Lichtman has tested his method on 50,000 people around the world and has had remarkable, consistent success. His book is called "How to Make Lots of Money for Anything - Fast!" but don't let the cheesy title scare you, it's packed with simple and effective mind power techniques. Click Here
