ANNIVERSARY OF REVERSE
SPEECH
This one is definitely from the "you've got to hear
it to believe it" department. According to Reverse Speech discoverer
David John Oates, we communicate subconsciously by speaking our innermost
thoughts "backwards" while we are speaking normally (forwards).
Oates has studied this field for 20 years, and has found thousands of
examples where hidden backward messages are contained in regular speech.
Most incredibly, reverse speech tells only the truth about what we are
feeling, even if we try to lie or mislead in our communications, making
it a perfect "truth detector" when analyzing political speeches.
If Reverse Speech is real, it would go a long way toward explaining our
"gut feelings" about people we meet, as we are constantly receiving
subconscious messages from them in their backwards conversations. This

SPEECH - THE FIRST 20 YEARS

It is the 20th anniversary of Reverse Speech coming up in October 2003. This article is written to look at the highlights of those 20 years and how Reverse Speech has grown since then.
In my other articles I describe Reverse Speech as another form of human communication, a covert form that occurs backwards in our speech. Reverse Speech theory states that language is bi-level, forward and backwards. As the human brain is constructing the sounds of speech, it is constructing those sounds in such a way that two messages are communicated simultaneously. One forwards from the conscious mind, and the other backwards from the unconscious mind. We are consciously unaware of this secondary form of communication, which I have entitled Reverse Speech, but the unconscious mind is aware of it. It hears its messages every time we speak and recognises the messages as human intuition.
In practice Reverse Speech can be heard and analysed by recording human speech and literally playing it backwards. Clear, grammatically correct sentences can then be heard amongst the normal backwards gibberish at regular intervals. Its rate of occurrence can vary depending on the nature of the speech. In rapid conversation between 2 or more people in high rapport, these backward messages can occur as often as once every 5 seconds. In structured monologues, the backward messages reduce in frequency to once every 30-60 seconds and in scripted public speeches, it can occur as little as once every 5 minutes.
The backward messages, or speech reversals, can reveal a variety of different information. On the surface level, if a lie is spoken forwards, the reversal can correct that lie and communicate the truth. If pertinent facts are left out of the conversation, the reversal may insert those facts. This can prove to be extremely beneficial in a variety of areas.
Reverse Speech first came to the public limelight in 1987 when I released my first book on the subject entitled “Beyond Backward Masking”, co-authored with my then research partner Greg Albrecht. Several media outlets reported on the story with one of them, SAS channel 7, describing it as the discovery of the seventh sense. From that time, I soon learned that the media and general public craved to know the reversals of prominent politicians and public figures.
According to my discoveries with Reverse Speech, the unconscious mind contains a wealth of information. It knows all about us, what we need, our wants and desires, and often the solutions to many of our problems. Reverse Speech directly accesses this information and can provide therapists with an amazing tool.

THE
THEORY OF REVERSE SPEECH AND SPEECH COMPLEMENTARITY
Reverse Speech is the name given to the discovery of a new form of
communication that has the ability to uncover a deeper truth and meaning
behind what we are actually speaking. As we speak consciously, the brain
is generating messages arising from the unconscious. These messages occur
constantly throughout language and can be heard very clearly at least
every 10 to 15 seconds by simply playing a recording of normal speech
in reverse.
(1) Human speech has two distinctive yet complementary functions and modes. The Overt mode is spoken forwards and is primarily under conscious control. The Covert mode is spoken backward and is not under conscious control. The backward mode of speech occurs simultaneously with the forward mode and is a reversal of the forward speech sounds.
(2) These two modes of speech, forward and backward, are dependent upon each other and form an integral part of human communication. One mode cannot be fully understood without the other mode. In the dynamics of interpersonal communication, both modes of speech combined communicate the total psyche of the person, conscious as well as unconscious.
(3) Covert
speech develops before overt speech. Children speak backwards before they
do forwards. Then, as forward speech commences, the two modes of speech
gradually combine into one, forming an overall bi-level communication
process.

If you’re
shocked by some of the statements coming out of Washington these days,
you should listen to them backwards. So say conspiracy theorists, anyway.
“Our
politicians say one thing forwards and another thing in reverse,”
says David Oates, founder of the Reverse Speech Alliance, who provided
ABCNEWS.com with a sampling of Bill Clinton, Bob Dole and Newt Gingrich
talking backwards.
Earlier this
year, questioned about his relationship with Monica Lewinsky and the Whitewater
investigation, Clinton told reporters, “There has not been a single
shred of evidence of anything dishonest I’ve ever done in my public
life.”
But play
that statement in reverse and listen again. Oates claims the president
is saying, “Denied the habits and I said, ‘Damn, Yeah!’”
Even Clinton’s
most ardent opponents might doubt any politician is capable of such double
talk. Certainly, the psychiatric community doesn’t have much to say
about Oates’ work. But Oates claims the subconscious is constantly
working in reverse, sending out a message at least every 15 seconds.
