Controversial Psi Lab to Close

The Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research group (PEARS) has announced on their website that the controversial laboratory will end its relationship with the Ivy-league school at the end of this month.

The reason? Administrators feel that many of its basic research goals have been reached. Further investigations will be carried out through a new non-profit organization, the International Consciousness Research Laboratories, according to a statement on the Web site.

PEAR opened in 1979 under the guidance of Roger Jahn, dean of Princeton's School of Engineering and Applied Science. Its mission, according to the Web site, was to pursue "rigorous scientific study of the interaction of human consciousness with sensitive physical devices, systems, and processes common to contemporary engineering practice."

Those of us who were around in the late 70s will remember that extra-sensory perception was a very hot topic, with late-night hosts showing off people who could bend spoons with nothing but concentration. Now, the subject is more relegated to magic tricks used for children's birthday parties or to break the ice at a singles party. PEAR's work, according to the group's Web site, doesn't involve spoons. Instead, activities of the human mind are measured with sensitive physical devises and systems that have been created for use in other scientific applications.

PEAR's new organization, ICRL will be independent of Princeton, which many thought was an odd host for what some might consider an unscientific subject. Like PEAR, ICRL will focus on quality research, educational initiatives and practical applications.

Skeptic Revamps $1,000,000 Psychic Prize

By Kevin Poulsen
Source: Wired Magazine

If you're an undiscovered psychic, soothsayer, dowser or medium, time may be running out for you to put your supernatural powers to the test and claim a million dollar prize.

But you already knew that, didn't you?

Ten years after stage magician and avowed skeptic James Randi first offered a seven-figure payday to anyone capable of demonstrating paranormal phenomenon under scientific scrutiny, the 79-year-old clear-eyed curmudgeon is revising the rules of his nonprofit foundation's Million Dollar Challenge to better target high-profile charlatans, and spend less time on unknown psychics, who too often turn out to be delusional instead of deceptive.

"We can't waste the hundreds of hours that we spend every year on the nutcases out there -- people who say they can fly by flapping their arms," says Randi. "We have three file drawers jam-packed with those collections.... There are over 300 claims that we have handled in detail."

Baby Mind Reader Ready for Psychic Challenge

: Paranormal Review

Derek Ogilvie, a British medium who claims to be able to read babies’ minds – a sort of “child whisperer” – is eager to relieve the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) of $1 million by proving his psychic abilities are real.

No formal application has yet been made but his acceptance of the challenge, if it goes ahead, is likely to be the subject of a television documentary. Ogilvie’s work was featured in Channel 5’s reality series, The Baby Mind Reader.

Scottish-born Ogilvie, 41, has been a practicing medium for several years. His speciality came about, he says, during a reading for a mother whose three-week-old child began sending him strong telepathic messages about the family’s life together.

Now, he is called in by parents whose children have sleeping, eating or crying problems that do not respond to conventional cures. Fiona McCade, writing in The Scotsman last year (15 June 2006) told of her own experience when he visited her and her 10-month-old son, for whom meal times were a battleground, because he was still treating solid food with suspicion, and whose sleep patterns were erratic.

Women Turn to Hypnosis to Get Pregnant

By Dennis Douda,
Source: WCCO.com

Hypnosis is used for all kinds of things, including quitting smoking, losing weight and even limiting labor pain in the delivery room, but now some women swear the mind-over-matter technique is helping them get pregnant.

Amber Olson is a busy working mother with another baby on the way. Before her second son, Liam, was born, she had three and a half years of infertility and doctors could not find a physical reason.

Olson tried fertility treatments with no success. "It was really heartbreaking," she said.

Olson then turned to fertility hypnosis, a new complementary therapy that is gaining popularity. With a soothing voice and positive words, Olson said her hypnotherapist guided her to a relaxing, stress-free world.

"I felt excellent," Olson said. After only two sessions, Olson was pregnant.

How to Be Outstanding in any Situation

By Steve G. Jones,
Clinical Hypnotherapist

Better Living With Hypnosis

I would like to give you something you can use today. You will be amazed at how many times what I'm about to share will come in handy, if you use it.

This technique is called anchoring. Today, anchoring is generally considered part of the body of knowledge known as NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) which has its roots in Pavlovian behavior modification. You remember Pavlov. He was the Russian scientist who, in about the year 1900, made dogs salivate by ringing a bell.

Here's how he did it: He would start by ringing a bell while letting dogs smell meat powder. They would salivate from smelling the meat powder. Eventually, he only needed to ring a bell and this alone caused the dogs to salivate. The dogs had associated the bell with hunger. The bell was an anchor for salivation. Pretty simple, huh?

Unfortunately, you are exposed to this form of conditioning every day.

Did you know that TV commercial makers use anchoring to manipulate you? TV commercials will show you a sexy person smoking to cause you to associate (anchor) sexiness with smoking. Beer commercials are notorious for showing women in bikinis so that you will associate beer with sex. Fast food commercials show happy families clogging their arteries to cause you to associate eating garbage with being happy.

This technique has been used AGAINST you countless times.

Now, I'm going to hand you the keys to the car and let you take control of your anchoring. It is possible to apply this same basic technique to almost any problem. Smoking, overeating, nail biting, fear of public speaking, all of these conditions are treatable with NLP. On many of my hypnosis recordings, I use NLP to reinforce the positive change.

Let's take a look at how Pavlov's discovery can HELP you right now. I teach this technique to established actors who need a little boost between multi-million dollar movies. Yes, even established actors feel a little self-conscious sometimes. And they love quick powerful techniques which they can use before going on camera.
